This call supports the transition of energy-intensive industries from heat-based to electrically driven processes, enabling greater integration of renewable electricity and contributing to the EU’s climate neutrality and 2040 GHG reduction targets. Projects should demonstrate innovative electric technologies (e.g. membranes, electrochemistry, mechanical forces) that replace conventional heating, achieving at least 25% energy savings and improved economic performance. Proposals must include a realistic use case, a clear business and exploitation plan, and address scalability, environmental and societal impacts, and workforce implications, supporting the industrial decarbonisation supply chain in Europe.

Expected Outcome:

Energy Intensive industries will benefit from the following outcomes:

• Enable the integration of renewable electricity in the process industries by transitioning from heat driven to direct electricity driven process units in a plant;
• Contribute to achieving the EU climate neutrality objective as well as proposed 2040 90% GHG reduction target;
• Achieve 25% energy savings compared to processes based on relevant Best Available Technologies;
• Improve the economic viability of the entire unit compared to the state-of-the-art heat-driven process and increase the competitiveness and resilience of the European process industry.
